Revision Policy

Terms defining how many changes or revisions are included in a project price.

Definition

A revision policy specifies how many rounds of changes or revisions are included in a quoted price, and what happens when additional revisions are needed. Typical policies include 2-3 revision rounds, after which additional changes are billed hourly or per-round.

Clear revision policies prevent "scope creep by a thousand cuts" where endless small changes consume unpaid time. They also set client expectations about the iterative process.

Why It Matters

Without revision limits, clients may request unlimited changes—and some will. This turns fixed-price projects into unlimited-effort engagements, destroying profitability. Revision policies set boundaries while still providing flexibility.

Revision policies work best when coupled with clear review processes. "Two revision rounds" is clearer when each round has a defined review period and formal sign-off process.

Examples

  • 1

A logo design package includes: initial concepts, 2 revision rounds, and final delivery. Additional revisions are $150 per round.

  • 2

A website quote: "Pricing includes 3 revision rounds per page. Revisions beyond this will be billed at $125/hour."

  • 3

A revision policy clarifies: "A revision round is feedback received within 5 business days. Feedback after sign-off constitutes a new round."
